Stephanie Maccombs-Hunter, Ph.D.
Dr. Stephanie Maccombs-Hunter holds a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision and a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health and Rehabilitation Counseling from Ohio University. She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with training supervision designation, a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor, and a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. She joined Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) at Ohio University in 2019 and serves as Assistant Director for Outreach and Consultation. In this role, she provides leadership and oversight of mental health outreach, consultation, and prevention initiatives. She coordinates outreach services across the university, collaborates with campus partners, and oversees the Bobcats Who Care suicide gatekeeper training. In addition to her administrative role, she provides individual, group, and crisis counseling, and supports students, faculty, and staff in matters related to mental health and safety. Her integrative therapeutic approach draws from cognitive behavioral therapy, rational emotive behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, and motivational interviewing, with an emphasis on client strengths. A native of Athens County, she brings deep familiarity with the local community. Her professional interests include college student mental health, substance use and co-occurring disorders, rural and Appalachian mental health, suicide prevention, and integrated care. Beyond CPS, she remains active in teaching, scholarship, and leadership in the counseling field. In her personal life, she enjoys music, camping, and time with family, friends, and pets.
